Etsy, Ebay: Hard to Tell the Difference

One of Etsy’s newest Sellers must be aware of the transparency rule – the name of his shop is makemoney1205 – very transparent about his primary goal, eh? But. As it becomes harder and harder to tell the difference between Etsy and Ebay, even he is not sure which site he is on:

ebay

Doesn’t matter. He fits right in on either site with his handmade goods.

Did you notice the 104 sales in three weeks??? That says a lot about Etsy. Besides the fact Etsy doesn’t mind making a dollar off illegal goods, the buyer demographic has taken a nosedive. It has changed from those willing to pay the price for unique, handmade, from-the-artisan-goods to those looking for cheap, mass-produced knock-offs. And make no mistake about it. This is going to get worse as more makemoney1205 shops open (and prosper).

Etsy? Ebay? Hard to tell the difference between the two.

  1. This store is a perfect example of a Chinese factory posing as a small Etsy shop. Wait, maybe that’s an unfair statement. After all, the store has no profile and no shop policies. Basically no way for me to tell what kind of shop it is. Except I’m an experienced online shopper/seller and know that Guangzhou, China could be called the land of many factories – as seen on Alibaba and other wholesale websites.

I can’t wait to see how they fill out their “mandatory” About page.

If you’re reading this, Etsy, you should know that these are not xenophobic comments. I have nothing against the hard-working people of China. Their government is the problem. They hate the idea of the individual and perpetuate the concept of collectivism. Trademark infringement means nothing to them. Factory workers are paid pennies while profits fill the pockets of the government elite and power their military.

The word is spreading. Etsy turns it’s head and allows anyone to sell manufactured goods. You don’t even have to pretend to fit their new definition of handmade. Bring Etsy your trademark infringing goods also. Etsy will make as much money on them as possible before being forced to close them down.

Karma – read up on it Etsy.

  2. Anyone making the statements you did here would get banned from the forums. You’d get the canned response that you’re making disparaging remarks about another country. Etsy doesn’t care what sells as long as it sells and they can take their cut. The shops from Guangzhou, China have items with a quantity of 999. Etsy encourages this while giving lip service about it not being allowed. If you report these shops you’ll still see them there 2 years from now. I know this from experience. It’s now very hard to even locate an item that’s handmade!

    • I agree! One of the reasons why I like Rusetsy is the ability to speak my mind without fear of reprisal. You have to be very careful what you say on Etsy’s forums or you will be muted and lose all forum privileges – permanently.
